Japanese Pop Culture in Ateneo: MatsuCon 2017

Many Filipinos are interested with Japanese culture because of the growing popularity of animes, cosplaying and even Japanese food that we become curious of. That is probably why Toushin, the Japanese art and culture student organization of Ateneo brought about the idea of MatsuCon 2017 which aims to immerse students and promote Japanese Pop Culture in their school.

MatsuCon comes from the combination of the words Matsuri which means festival in Japanese and Convention. The event took place last May 5 at Bellarmine Field, Ateneo De Manila University.

Exhibitors and Artists participated in the event showcasing their handicrafts, products and artworks which captured the interest of attendees. I loved roaming around the event since most of the exhibitors and artists are very familiar since they also have booths on events we normally attend too.

And of course, Perkee was there with their handcrafted (with love) fleece hands and plushies. Beside our booth was T-TEES with their personalized shirts for your fangirling/fanboying needs.

Garena PH sponsored some of the prizes for contests held in the event. The contests include an on-the-spot drawing and the idol competition. Two of their famous e-sports shoutcasters Arctik and Riku had a talk and shared some tips on how to become E-Sports Shoutcasters

A small meet-and-greet was also held for the fans of amazing cosplayers Yuri Nanami, Kimbie, Yuki Mallows and Hiro Saeki. Fans must have been thrilled to have their pictures taken with their favourite cosplayers.

And of course, what is a Japanese Pop Culture Event without a Cosplay Competition? Duragon JJ who cosplayed Ikoma of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress bagged the prize for winning the Cosplay Competition.

It was a truly fun-filled event that the attendees enjoyed. I’m looking forward to more events Toushin will organize!
